The Turtle Mountain Reserve is a premier natural destination located within the Iwokrama Forest in central Guyana. The centerpiece of the reserve is Turtle Mountain itself, which rises to an elevation of approximately 360 meters. A hike to the summit, which takes about two hours through dense primary rainforest, rewards visitors with a spectacular panoramic view over the vast canopy of the Essequibo River basin. Geologically, the mountain is a monadnock, an isolated hill that has resisted erosion more than the surrounding plain. The area is particularly noted for its high density of primates, especially the red howler monkeys, whose vocalizations characterize the forest soundscape. In addition to its biodiversity, the mountain holds archaeological significance, with ancient petroglyphs discovered at its base. Managed by the Iwokrama International Centre, the reserve focuses on conservation and ecological education. The trail to the top provides an excellent opportunity to observe the vertical stratification of rainforest vegetation and various species of tropical flora.
