Garafiri Hydropower Plant (Guinea)

Weather…

The Garafiri Hydropower Plant is a historically significant energy project in Guinea, marking the first major dam built on the Konkouré River. Commissioned in 1999 during the presidency of Lansana Conté, Garafiri became a symbol of Guinea's push for self-reliance, partly funded through a unique national fundraising campaign known as the 'Franc de l’espoir'. With an installed capacity of 75 megawatts, the plant laid the groundwork for the modern electrification of the capital, Conakry. Geographically, it is located in a rugged area at the foothills of the Fouta Djallon, where the Konkouré River carves through deep valleys. The facility features a 75-meter-high earth-fill dam and a substantial reservoir lake. Economically, Garafiri was the first project to provide a relatively stable power supply for Middle Guinea's growing urban and industrial needs. Although now surpassed in scale by the Kaléta and Souapiti dams, Garafiri remains a vital part of the national power grid and a landmark of Guinean infrastructure engineering. The reservoir also supports local artisanal fishing and serves as an important water resource for the region.
