Fria is a significant industrial city in western Guinea, notable for being the site of the first alumina refinery on the African continent. Located approximately 160 kilometers north of the capital, Conakry, it sits in a transitional zone leading to the Fouta Djallon highlands. The industrial complex was established in the late 1950s under French colonial rule, and production officially commenced in 1960, shortly after Guinea gained its independence. The Friguia company, currently managed by the Russian conglomerate RUSAL, remains the cornerstone of the local economy and social structure. Fria was developed as a planned modern city to provide housing and amenities for thousands of refinery and mine workers. The city is connected to the port of Conakry by a dedicated railway line, which is vital for exporting refined alumina to global markets. The surrounding geography features undulating hills and a humid tropical climate, which supports open-cast bauxite mining but also presents environmental conservation challenges in the region.
