The highest point on Greek soil is the Delimpos peak at 1,953 meters, while the prominent Elatia (Kula) peak reaches 1,827 meters. Geologically, the range is composed of ancient crystalline rocks like gneiss and marble, resulting in numerous cave systems and dramatic waterfalls. The Nestos River carves through the landscape, forming spectacular meanders that are designated as nature reserves of international ecological importance. This region serves as a vital sanctuary for large mammals, including the brown bear and grey wolf, along with rare raptors. Historically, the Rhodopes were the homeland of the Thracian Bessi tribe and are mythologically linked to the birthplace of Orpheus.
