💡 Tips
- The drive through the gorge is spectacular but the road is a single lane in places; drive slowly and honk at blind corners.
- Bring a warm jacket for the Devil's Throat Cave, as the temperature stays around 8°C year-round inside.
- Bring enough cash, as card payments are rare and there are no reliable ATMs in the village.
- Visit the cave right at opening time to beat the large tour bus crowds.
🍽 Food
A traditional Rhodope potato pie. Order it at any village guesthouse; it is usually baked slowly and needs some time.
Fresh river fish from the gorge. Try it grilled at the small eateries situated near the riverbanks.
An endemic herbal mountain tea. Enjoy a hot cup sweetened with local pine honey to warm up after the chilly cave.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
A traditional remedy and sweet treat. You can find it sold at the small vendor stalls near the cave entrance.
Buy a bundle of the dried mountain herbs as a healthy and authentic souvenir from the region.
Even if you don't do the extreme caving tour, the hiking path up gives beautiful, quiet viewpoints over the gorge.
Walk past the village limits towards Zhrebevo to find untouched meadows, grazing horses, and absolute silence.

Trigrad is a remote village in the heart of the Western Rhodopes, near the Greek border. The region is primarily known for the spectacular Trigrad Gorge, whose vertical rock walls rise up to 300 meters, leaving only a narrow corridor for the river and the road. The drive through the gorge is an awe-inspiring experience and leads directly to the entrance of the Devil's Throat Cave (Dyavolsko Garlo). The Devil's Throat Cave is closely linked to the legend of Orpheus, who is said to have descended into the underworld here to save his beloved Eurydice. Inside the cave is one of Europe's highest underground waterfalls, plunging with a deafening noise into the 'Thunder Hall'. Trigrad is also a center for ecotourism, offering opportunities for horseback riding, climbing, and bird watching for rare species like the wallcreeper. The village's architecture is traditionally simple, and the hospitality of the locals is legendary. In the small family-run hotels, visitors can try local specialties like Patatnik (a potato dish) and Mursalski tea. Due to the high altitude of over 1200 meters, the air here is extremely pure, making Trigrad a well-suited spot for those seeking relaxation and wanting to discover Bulgaria's wild nature far off the beaten track.
