Devil's Throat Reserve (Bulgaria)

Weather…

The Dyavolsko Garloto Cave, known as the Devil's Throat, is located in the impressive Trigrad Gorge of the Western Rhodopes. It is one of Bulgaria's most fascinating natural phenomena, differing from classic show caves due to its vertical orientation. The entrance leads into a massive cavity called the 'Hall of Thunder,' which is the second-largest underground hall in the Balkans. Here, the Trigrad River plunges into a spectacular 42-meter-high underground waterfall, making the cave a place of mystical energy. According to legend, this is the spot where Orpheus descended into the realm of Hades to retrieve his beloved Eurydice. The cave is also of ecological significance, housing one of the region's largest bat colonies. Visitors must climb over 300 steep steps to reach the exit, which has a view of the gorge's rugged rock walls. The water temperature of the underground river remains constantly low throughout the year, and many secrets of the cave's siphon system remain unexplained to this day.
