Ptolemaida is one of Greece's most important industrial cities, located in the Kozani regional unit of Western Macedonia. Its economy is dominated by lignite (brown coal) mining and the power plants that supply a large portion of Greece's electricity. While not a classic tourist destination, it features a unique look into industrial Greece. The sheer scale of the open-pit mines is impressive. The city itself is modern, rebuilt after earthquakes. Nearby, one can visit the beautiful Lake Vegoritida or the traditional village of Nymfaio. The city is accessible via the Egnatia Odos highway. The best time to visit the region is during spring or autumn. Local cuisine is hearty, typical of northern Greece, with pies and meat dishes.
