Kozani serves as the administrative capital of the West Macedonia region, situated at an elevation of 710 meters on a plateau between the Vermio and Polyfytos mountains. Founded in the 14th century by settlers from Epirus, it evolved into a significant commercial hub for textiles and furs during the Ottoman period. A primary cultural landmark is the Koventareios Municipal Library, the second largest in Greece after the National Library in Athens, housing over 150,000 volumes and rare manuscripts dating back to the 11th century. Geographically, the region is globally renowned for the cultivation of Krokos Kozanis, a premium saffron variety grown in surrounding villages since the 17th century. In modern times, Kozani functions as the energy heart of Greece due to the extensive lignite mines and power plants in its vicinity. The city's historic core features the Church of Agios Nikolaos, built in 1664, and several neoclassical mansions belonging to wealthy merchant families of the 18th century.
