Giannitsa is the largest city in the Pella regional unit of Central Macedonia, situated in a fertile plain that was once dominated by a vast lake. The city has a deep history dating back to the Ottoman period, during which it was regarded as a holy city for Muslims and a center of Islamic culture in the Balkans. Numerous monuments from this era, such as the mausoleum of Gazi Evrenos, still stand today. A turning point in its history was the Battle of Giannitsa in 1912 during the First Balkan War, which resulted in its liberation from Ottoman rule. Following the drainage of Lake Giannitsa in the 1930s, the town transformed into a significant agricultural and commercial hub. Modern Giannitsa is a bustling city with a lively pedestrian center, serving as a gateway to the nearby ancient capital of Pella, the birthplace of Alexander the Great.
