Grevena is located in Southwestern Macedonia along the banks of the Grevenitis River and is famously known as the Greek capital of wild mushrooms. The city is surrounded by the majestic Pindus Mountains and serves as the gateway to the Valia Calda National Park, one of Greece's most important nature reserves. Grevena has a history extending back to the Ottoman era, but it was significantly damaged by a major earthquake in 1995 and subsequently rebuilt with a modern urban layout. The region is renowned for its traditional stone bridges, such as the Portitsa Bridge, which are masterpieces of 18th and 19th-century local craftsmanship. Culturally, Grevena has officially embraced the title "City of Mushrooms," evident in various mushroom sculptures, specialty shops, and an annual mushroom festival. Geologically, the area is of great interest due to significant paleontological finds, including the tusks of a prehistoric mastodon discovered in the nearby Milia. The city provides an excellent base for ecotourism, mountaineering, and visits to the Vasilitsa ski center.
