Mende is a historic mountain city in the Occitanie region, serving as the prefecture of the Lozère department. It is beautifully situated in the Lot river valley, at the foot of the Mont Mimat. The town's dominant landmark is the massive Cathedral of Saint-Privat, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture whose construction was funded by Pope Urban V, a native of the region. The cathedral is famous for its asymmetrical towers and once housed the 'Non-Pareille', the largest bell in the world at the time. Mende's old town is remarkably well-preserved, featuring a labyrinth of narrow streets, stone facades, and the 13th-century Notre-Dame bridge, which remains one of the symbols of the city. For centuries, Mende was a major stop on pilgrimage routes and a center of religious and political power in the Gévaudan province. Today, it is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, providing an excellent base for exploring the Gorges du Tarn and the Cévennes National Park. The city is also known to cycling fans for the 'Montée Laurent Jalabert', a steep climb that frequently features in the Tour de France, leading up to the local airfield on the plateau.
