Agde is one of France's oldest cities, located in the Hérault department within the Occitanie region. Founded around 525 BC by Phocaean Greek settlers as 'Agathé Tyché', the town has a unique visual identity due to the extensive use of black basalt from the extinct Mont Saint-Loup volcano, earning it the nickname 'The Black Pearl'. The city's architectural centerpiece is the 12th-century Cathedral of Saint-Étienne, a fortified church built entirely of dark volcanic stone. Geographically, Agde is strategically positioned at the meeting point of the Hérault river, the Canal du Midi, and the Mediterranean Sea. Since the 1970s, the development of the Cap d'Agde seaside resort has made the area one of Europe's premier tourist destinations, famous for its large marina and its expansive naturist village. The local economy is heavily centered on summer tourism, supplemented by traditional viticulture and fishing industries. The Musée de l'Ephèbe showcases significant underwater archaeological finds, most notably the famous bronze statue known as the 'Ephebe of Agde', discovered in the bed of the Hérault.

Carved by ancient volcanic activity, this crescent-shaped bay in Agde features striking black sand. A dramatic yet intimate mood makes it stand out from typical Mediterranean beaches. Visitors come to marvel at the dark shorelines, take striking photos, and enjoy a unique swim. Bringing a thick towel is advised, as the dark sand can get remarkably warm in the sun.
