Montauban is the capital of the Tarn-et-Garonne department and is recognized as the oldest of the medieval 'bastide' towns in Southwest France. Founded in 1144 by the Count of Toulouse on a strategic hill overlooking the Tarn River, the city played a key role in regional defense. The centerpiece of the town is the Place Nationale, a striking square featuring unique double-arched porticos, rebuilt in its current red-brick form after fires in the 17th century. The Pont Vieux, a massive bridge dating from the 14th century, spans the Tarn and was originally integrated into the city's fortifications. Montauban is also famous as the birthplace of the renowned painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres; the Ingres-Bourdelle Museum is housed in the former episcopal palace to honor his legacy. During the French Wars of Religion, the city served as a major Protestant stronghold, significantly shaping its historical trajectory. Today, Montauban blends its rich heritage with a lively modern atmosphere, serving as a vital economic hub in the Occitania region.
