Rodez is the historic capital of the Rouergue region and the current administrative seat of the Aveyron department. Perched on a high rocky plateau, the city gives expansive views over the surrounding countryside. Its most prominent landmark is the Notre-Dame de Rodez Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece constructed between the 13th and 16th centuries. The cathedral's 87-meter-high bell tower, adorned with intricate stonework, is one of the tallest of its kind in France. The old town is home to numerous well-preserved Renaissance and medieval mansions, such as the Maison d'Armagnac. In recent years, Rodez has transformed into a significant center for contemporary art with the opening of the Soulages Museum in 2014, dedicated to the world-renowned painter Pierre Soulages. The museum's striking modern architecture provides a fascinating contrast to the city's ancient stone facades. Rodez also serves as a hub for local gastronomy and traditional craftsmanship, maintaining a strong cultural identity within the heart of Occitania.
