Albi, often referred to as the 'Red City', is the capital of the Tarn department and is famous for its distinctive red-brick architecture. Situated on the banks of the Tarn River, the city is dominated by the massive Sainte-Cécile Cathedral, recognized as the largest brick cathedral in the world. Built in the 13th century as a fortress-church, it symbolized the Catholic Church's triumph over the Cathar heresy following the Albigensian Crusade. Adjacent to the cathedral stands the Palais de la Berbie, a former bishop's palace that now houses the renowned Toulouse-Lautrec Museum. Albi was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2010 for its exceptional ensemble of medieval buildings and its unique episcopal district. The old town features narrow winding streets and memorable views of the river from the Pont Vieux, a bridge dating back to the 11th century. Today, the city remains a bustling cultural hub in Occitania, meticulously preserving its rich historical and artistic heritage.
