Laudun-l'Ardoise is a dynamic and diverse commune in the Gard department, characterized by its deep historical roots and strong industrial presence. The town is split into two distinct parts: the ancient village of Laudun, set against the hills, and the riverside district of L'Ardoise. One of its most significant landmarks is the Camp de César, a vast 18-hectare archaeological site situated on a plateau. This site was an important Gallo-Roman settlement and gives some of the most panoramic views of the Rhône Valley. Economically, the town is a heavyweight in the wine industry; the 'Laudun' AOC is one of the celebrated labels within the Côtes du Rhône region, particularly famous for its high-quality white wines. In contrast, the L'Ardoise sector has been a key industrial hub since the 19th century, featuring a major river port and steel production facilities that take advantage of the Rhône's transportation capabilities. This blend of ancient viticultural traditions and modern industrial activity defines the town's unique identity. The landscape around Laudun is a beautiful mix of vineyards and Mediterranean scrubland, making it a popular spot for hiking and wine tourism. The town hosts several annual events that celebrate its heritage, from Roman-themed festivals to prestigious wine fairs.
