Situated on the right bank of the Rhône river in the Gard department, Roquemaure is home to a rich history shaped by river trade and centuries-old viticulture. During the Middle Ages, it served as a bustling river port and gained historical prominence when Pope Clement V died at the local castle in 1314. Today, the dramatic ruins of the Château de Roquemaure, with its two surviving medieval towers, stand as a testament to this era and provide sweeping views across the Rhône valley. The town is deeply rooted in winemaking and is a key producer within the esteemed Cru Lirac appellation, known particularly for its robust red and elegant rosé wines. Beyond wine and popes, Roquemaure holds a unique romantic distinction: the collegiate church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste houses the relics of Saint Valentine, the patron saint of lovers. These relics were brought from Rome in the 19th century by a local wealthy winemaker seeking divine protection for the vineyards against the phylloxera blight. To celebrate this heritage, the town hosts a bustling Lovers' Festival every two years, transforming the streets with elaborate 19th-century costumes, horse-drawn carriages, and lively street performances.
