Orange, located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, is a city of outstanding historical significance, particularly renowned for its Roman heritage. Founded as the Roman colony 'Arausio' in the 1st century BC, it features two structures designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites since 1981: the Roman Theater, famous for its monumental stage wall measuring 103 meters in length, and the Triumphal Arch, a masterpiece of Roman provincial art. The city also holds a unique place in European history as the seat of the Principality of Orange, from which the Dutch Royal Family (the House of Orange-Nassau) derives its name. Situated in the Rhône Valley, Orange is surrounded by prestigious vineyards, including Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The climate is Mediterranean, frequently influenced by the powerful Mistral wind. Every summer, the ancient theater hosts the 'Chorégies d'Orange', one of the oldest and most prestigious opera festivals in the world. Today, the local economy relies on cultural tourism, agriculture (specifically fruit and wine production), and the presence of significant military facilities, including a Foreign Legion regiment and an airbase.
