Piolenc in the Vaucluse department proudly holds the title of "Capital of Garlic," a label that defines the agricultural heritage of the municipality to this day. Every August, the village hosts its nationally recognized garlic festival, during which the streets smell of the fresh harvest and braids of purple garlic hang from the market stalls. The historic Route Nationale 7, the legendary holiday road leading down to southern France, passes right through the town and is celebrated here with its own nostalgic automobile museum, the Musée de la Nationale 7. The narrow lanes of the historic center lead up to the Saint-Pierre church, which draws attention with its Romanesque foundations and Provençal architectural style. Just outside the village core, the Lac Saint-Chamand becomes a major draw in summer, offering a popular swimming lake lined with large trees that provides cooling relief and picnic spots. In the surrounding fields, local farmers grow melons and sunflowers alongside garlic, transforming the landscape around Piolenc into a spirited display of colors during the summer months.
