Korouoma Valley (Finland)

Weather…

Korouoma Valley is a spectacular fracture valley in the municipality of Posio, southeastern Lapland. It extends for about 30 kilometers and is incised about 130 meters deep into the surrounding terrain at its deepest point. Geologically, it is a fault zone hundreds of millions of years old in the Precambrian bedrock, further deepened by the erosion of ice ages. The valley is particularly famous for its massive ice falls that form on the steep rock faces in winter, attracting climbers from all over the world. In summer, the canyon features a diverse landscape of dense forests, bubbling streams, and rugged cliffs. The flora and fauna in the valley are diverse, as the sheltered location creates a slightly milder microclimate than on the surrounding highlands. A marked hiking trail runs through the central part of the canyon, providing insights into the region's dramatic geology. The area is designated as a nature reserve to preserve its unique geomorphological formations.
