Rock-Hewn Churches, Lalibela (Ethiopia)

Weather…

The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, located in the Amhara region, are an architectural marvel and a major spiritual center for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. These eleven monolithic churches were carved directly out of solid volcanic tuff during the 12th and 13th centuries under the reign of King Lalibela. The king's vision was to create a 'New Jerusalem' in Africa after Christian access to the Holy Land was blocked. The most iconic of these is Beta Giyorgis (House of Saint George), which was carved in the shape of a great Greek cross deep into the ground. All the churches are interconnected by a sophisticated network of tunnels, trenches, and drainage systems. Far from being mere historical relics, these sites remain active places of worship, drawing thousands of pilgrims annually. Lalibela was one of the first sites to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978. The extraordinary precision and artistic detail of the carving continue to astound historians and travelers alike.
