Kobo serves as a significant commercial hub on the main highway connecting Addis Ababa with Mekele. The town's economy is primarily based on agriculture, with sorghum, maize, and teff being the main crops. Thanks to modern irrigation projects, Kobo has become a pioneer in agricultural modernization. Historically, the region was the scene of significant political and ecological changes, particularly during the droughts of the 20th century.
