Debre Birhan is a historic city in the North Shewa Zone of the Amhara Region, established in 1454 by Emperor Zara Yaqob. The city's name translates to 'Mountain of Light,' commemorating a celestial phenomenon that the Emperor interpreted as a divine sign during the construction of a church. Situated at an elevation of roughly 2,840 meters, it is one of the coldest and highest major cities in Ethiopia, often characterized by its bracing climate and high-altitude mist. Historically an imperial capital, Debre Birhan has evolved into a thriving industrial hub, well-known for its long-standing wool blanket factory and several major breweries. The city is also an academic center, home to Debre Birhan University, and a key transit point on the highway linking Addis Ababa to northern Ethiopia. The surrounding highlands are a center for sheep farming, providing the raw materials for the local wool industry. Despite its rapid modernization, the city retains deep historical roots and remains a significant site of Ethiopian Orthodox heritage.
