Biete Medhane Alem (Ethiopia)

Weather…

Biete Medhane Alem in Lalibela is the largest monolithic church in the world and a preeminent example of 12th-century Ethiopian Orthodox architecture. It was carved directly from solid red volcanic rock under the reign of King Lalibela, with a design intended to mimic Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem. Measuring 33 meters in length and 23 meters in width, the structure is surrounded by 34 rectangular columns that support the heavy stone roof. The interior is divided into five naves and houses the famous 7-kilogram golden Lalibela Cross, which is used during major religious processions. As part of the eleven rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1978. The church is not only an architectural marvel but also a living religious center where daily services are still conducted. Pilgrims from all over Ethiopia visit this site to seek spiritual healing and experience the holy atmosphere of the temple complexes carved into the ground.
