Borena Saynt National Park (Ethiopia)

Weather…

Borena-Saynt National Park, also known as Borena-Saynt Worehimeno, is located in the north-central highlands of Ethiopia within the South Wollo Zone of the Amhara Region. The protected area covers approximately 4,375 hectares and is characterized by its high-altitude landscape, reaching elevations of over 3,700 meters. Geographically, the park features rugged mountains, deep gorges, and Afro-alpine grasslands typical of the Ethiopian plateau. It serves as a vital habitat for several endemic wildlife species, including the rare Ethiopian wolf and the Gelada baboon, which inhabit the steep rocky escarpments. The flora is dominated by heath forests (Erica species) and giant lobelias, adapted to the cold and thin air of the highlands. Established as a national park in 2009, its primary mission is to prevent habitat loss driven by grazing and agricultural encroachment. The park is also significant for water catchment, supplying essential resources to the surrounding agricultural plains.
