Debre Markos is the administrative capital of the East Gojjam Zone in the Amhara Region and historically served as the capital of the Gojjam province. The city takes its name from the prominent church of Saint Mark, established in the 19th century by Negus Tekle Haymanot, who made the city his political center. Perched at an elevation of roughly 2,450 meters, it has panoramic views of the surrounding highlands and is situated near the dramatic gorges of the Blue Nile. Debre Markos is a vital commercial center for agricultural products, particularly teff, wheat, and pulses, which thrive on the fertile volcanic soils of the Gojjam plateau. The Debre Markos University is a key institution that has driven modern infrastructure development and academic growth in the region. Its location on the main highway between Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar makes it a significant logistics and transit hub. The city combines historical significance with a growing modern urban landscape, reflecting its role as a regional leader in northern Ethiopia.
