Church of St. George Lalibela (Ethiopia)

Weather…

Biete Ghiorgis, the Church of St. George in Lalibela, is the most iconic and architecturally first-rate structure of the UNESCO World Heritage site in Ethiopia. Carved in the late 12th or early 13th century in the shape of a Greek cross, it was hewn directly into the reddish tuff rock from the ground level downwards. Unlike other churches in Lalibela, it stands isolated in a deep, square courtyard and is accessible only through an underground tunnel. The precision of the stonework is remarkable, with the roof decorated with three concentric cross reliefs that efficiently drain rainwater. According to legend, the construction was personally supervised by Saint George after he appeared in a dream to King Lalibela. The interior is simple and exudes a deep spiritual calm, enhanced by the dim light filtering through narrow windows. Today, the church is a world-renowned symbol of Ethiopian history, attracting thousands of tourists and devout pilgrims annually. It is often referred to as the 'eighth wonder of the world' and represents the pinnacle of monolithic architecture in Ethiopia's Christian world.
