Tortolì is located on the eastern coast of Sardinia and forms the most populous center of the historic Ogliastra region. The town is characterized by a wide coastal plain and the large Stagno di Tortolì, a lagoon known for fishing and the traditional production of bottarga. The municipal area includes the port town of Arbatax, famous for the red porphyry rocks (Rocce Rosse) at its harbor entrance. The coastline of Tortolì gives numerous sandy beaches, interrupted by Capo Bellavista and its historic lighthouse. The white sand of Spiaggia di San Gemiliano and the wind-sheltered Porto Frailis beach are easily accessible. Stretching along the bay are also Spiaggia Riva di Ponente, Spiaggia di Isula Manna, and Spiaggia di Iscrixedda, often featuring shallow waters and fringed by pine forests. The port of Arbatax connects the region with the Italian mainland and is the terminus of the historic 'Trenino Verde' narrow-gauge railway. The center of Tortolì features a shopping street and year-round restaurants that combine the agricultural products of the hinterland with local seafood.
