Guassa Conservation Area (Ethiopia)

Weather…

The Guassa Conservation Area is located in the central highlands of Ethiopia within the Amhara Region, covering an area of approximately 100 square kilometers. It stands as one of Africa's oldest known community-based conservation systems, with origins dating back to the 17th century through the traditional 'Qero' management system. The landscape ranges in elevation from 3,200 to 3,700 meters and is dominated by extensive stands of the eponymous Guassa grass (Festuca species). This Afro-alpine moorland provides a critical habitat for the endangered Ethiopian wolf, as well as the Gelada baboon and the rock hyrax. Beyond its ecological significance, the area holds high cultural value for the local communities, who strictly regulate the harvesting of grass for thatch and rope making. Through sustainable local governance, biodiversity has been preserved for centuries against the pressures of modernization. Today, the area is globally recognized as a model for indigenous conservation and is a destination for researchers and eco-tourists.
