Debre Libanos Monastery (Ethiopia)

Weather…

Debre Libanos Monastery, founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot, is one of the most significant spiritual centers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. It is spectacularly situated on the edge of a deep gorge in the Selale district of the Oromia region. Over the centuries, the monastery was a seat of the Abuna, the head of the church, and played a central role in theological education and imperial politics. The original monastery was the site of a brutal massacre in 1937 during the Italian occupation, in which hundreds of monks and believers were killed. The current main church was built in the 1960s under Emperor Haile Selassie and features impressive stained-glass windows by Afewerk Tekle. The site also includes the cave where Tekle Haymanot is said to have prayed for several years. Thousands of pilgrims visit the site annually to seek healing in the monastery's spring water.
