Basílica del Voto Nacional (Ecuador)

Weather…

The Basilica del Voto Nacional in Quito is the most significant Neo-Gothic structure in Ecuador and one of the largest churches in the Americas. Construction began in the late 19th century after the state of Ecuador was consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with the cornerstone laid in 1892. Designed by French architect Emilio Tarlier, the cathedral's structure is modeled after Notre-Dame in Paris but features unique local characteristics. Instead of traditional mythical gargoyles, the facades are adorned with sculptures of Ecuadorian fauna, including iguanas, tortoises, and condors. The two main towers reach a height of 115 meters and offer a spectacular panoramic view of the entire city and the surrounding Andean peaks. A local myth suggests that the world will end once the Basilica is fully completed, which is why it remains technically unfinished to this day. The interior is highlighted by lively stained-glass windows depicting biblical scenes and Ecuadorian landscapes.
