Santuario de Guápulo (Ecuador)

Weather…

The Sanctuary of Guápulo is a magnificent church located in the neighborhood of the same name in Quito, picturesquely set on the slopes leading down to the Tumbaco Valley. Built in the 17th century between 1644 and 1693, it is regarded as the first sanctuary in Ecuador dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe. Its architecture harmoniously blends Baroque and Neoclassical elements, representing a masterpiece of the Franciscan order. Inside, the church impresses with its rich decoration, including intricate carvings by Juan Bautista Menacho and paintings by the famous artist Miguel de Santiago. The pulpit of Guápulo is considered one of the finest in South America, a prime example of the detailed craftsmanship in colonial woodwork. The monastery building adjacent to the church now houses a museum with valuable exhibits of religious art. Due to its secluded location in what was once a rural village, the sanctuary maintains an atmosphere of silence and contemplation that distinguishes it from downtown churches.
