Independence Monument (Ecuador)

Weather…

The Independence Monument, also known as the Monument to the Heroes of August 10, 1809, stands at the heart of Plaza Grande in Quito's historic center. This imposing landmark commemorates the 'First Cry of Independence' in Latin America, when local patriots rose against Spanish colonial rule. It was inaugurated on August 10, 1906, by President Eloy Alfaro to mark the centenary of the uprising. The monument is rich in allegory: a condor at the summit breaking its chains symbolizes freedom, while a wounded lion at the base of the Liberty figure represents the retreat of Spanish forces. Bronze reliefs around the pedestal depict key scenes from the historic event and the names of the martyrs. Designed by architect Lorenzo Durini and crafted by Italian artists, the monument is a powerful symbol of national identity. Located in the city's main square, it remains a focal point for civic gatherings and official ceremonies.
