Iglesia de la Merced (Ecuador)

Weather…

The Iglesia de la Merced is a prominent religious landmark in the historic district of Quito, renowned for its distinctive white tower. The current church was built between 1700 and 1736 in the Baroque style after the original 16th-century structure was destroyed by earthquakes. The building is characterized by a blend of Moorish influences (Mudéjar) and local Baroque elements typical of the region's architecture. Inside, the church houses magnificent altars covered in gold leaf and a valuable collection of paintings by artist Victor Mideros. A special sanctuary is the statue of the 'Virgin of Mercy' on the main altar, revered as the city's protector against volcanic eruptions. The adjacent convent features one of the most beautiful cloisters in the city, with a central stone fountain and a historic library. The architecture of the tower, which contains one of the city's largest clocks, makes the church one of the most photographed landmarks in Quito.
