Fortín de la Planchada (Ecuador)

Weather…

The Fortín de la Planchada is a historical fortification located at the base of Cerro Santa Ana in the Las Peñas neighborhood of Guayaquil. It was constructed in 1647 to defend the city against frequent attacks by pirates and privateers who plagued the Gulf of Guayaquil. The installation consists of a massive stone wall and a platform where historical cannons from the 17th and 18th centuries are still displayed today. In 1709, the fort was the site of a significant defensive battle against the pirate Woodes Rogers. Its architecture is functionally military and marks the origin of the port city's defense strategy during the colonial era. Following extensive restoration efforts as part of Guayaquil's urban renewal, the fort is now a central part of the tourist circuit in Las Peñas. It features not only historical insights but also a wide view over the Guayas River and the modern Malecón 2000. The monument serves as a reminder of the city's resilience against maritime threats.
