Crystal Palace (Ecuador)

Weather…

The Palacio de Cristal in Guayaquil is a masterpiece of iron and glass architecture from the early 20th century. Located at the southern end of the Malecón 2000 riverside walk, it was originally known as the Mercado del Sur (South Market). The structure was designed by architects Francisco Manrique and Carlos van Ischot, who utilized plans attributed to the office of Gustave Eiffel. Its pre-fabricated iron components were manufactured in Belgium and shipped to Ecuador, where construction took place between 1907 and 1908. For decades, it served as the city's main market before being meticulously restored in 2002 as part of the urban renewal of the Guayas riverfront. Today, the palace functions as a versatile cultural center hosting high-profile art exhibitions and official events. Its transparent glass walls provide an open view of the river, seamlessly blending its industrial heritage with the modern cityscape. It stands as a testament to Guayaquil's historic wealth during the cacao boom era.
