Balzar is a tradition-rich city located in the northern part of the Guayas Province and is recognized as one of the most important agricultural producers in Ecuador's coastal region. The town was founded in 1847 as an ecclesiastical parish and was later elevated to a canton in 1903. Geographically, Balzar is situated on the banks of the Daule River, whose waters are vital for the irrigation of the vast agricultural lands in the area. The city is nationally known as the 'Maize Capital of Ecuador' because it has the highest corn production in the country. In addition to maize cultivation, livestock farming plays a central role in the local economy, with Balzar being highly regarded for its superior cattle breeds. The city's culture is deeply rooted in the 'Montubio' identity, which is showcased in annual rodeo events and traditional coastal cuisine. Every year, the city hosts the 'Feria del Maíz,' a festival that attracts farmers and tourists from across the nation. Modern Balzar combines its agricultural heritage with the expansion of agro-industrial processing to enhance the value of its local products.
