Djibouti Francolin Habitat (Djibouti)

Weather…

The habitat of the Djibouti Francolin is almost exclusively restricted to the Forêt du Day National Park in the Goda Mountains. This rare bird, scientifically known as Pternistis ochropectus, is endemic to Djibouti and inhabits cool juniper forests at altitudes between 1200 and 1700 meters. As populations have declined massively due to habitat loss and overgrazing by livestock, the species has been classified as Critically Endangered since 1994. Conservation measures focus on preserving the remaining primary forests and reforestation with native tree species. Geographically, the area is characterized by steep slopes and deep gorges that create a specific microclimate within the otherwise arid region. Research into this habitat provides important data for the country's biodiversity strategy and underscores the ecological significance of the isolated mountain forests in the Horn of Africa.

The best season to observe the Djibouti Francolin is the dry season from November to March, when the birds are more active in the juniper forests. During the wet season from April to October, they are harder to locate.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning just after sunrise is the most active time for the Francolin as it forages on the ground. Late afternoon hours before dusk also offer good sighting opportunities.
📜
Etiquette
Stay on existing paths to avoid damaging the sensitive forest floor vegetation. Avoid loud noises and sudden movements, as the Francolin is very shy.
🎒
What to bring
A good pair of medium-power binoculars is convenient for spotting the Francolin in dense undergrowth. Sturdy hiking boots and long trousers protect against thorns and rocky terrain.
