The Ituri Rainforest in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the most biologically diverse regions on Earth. Covering approximately 63,000 square kilometers, it is traversed by the Ituri River, a major tributary of the Congo. The forest is world-renowned for the Okapi Wildlife Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site that protects the largest remaining population of the elusive okapi. Geographically, the forest sits on an upland plateau at elevations between 700 and 1,000 meters, characterized by dense, primary tropical growth. It has been the ancestral home of the Mbuti pygmies for millennia, whose culture and survival are intrinsically linked to the forest ecosystem. However, the region faces severe threats from deforestation, poaching, and illegal gold mining, which jeopardize its delicate ecological balance. Scientifically, the Ituri Forest is a vital area for studying evolutionary biology and carbon sequestration in Central Africa.

Getting there

The Ituri forest in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo is best accessed via the RN4 national road, which traverses the area and provides access to settlements like Epulu.

Best season

Visits should be scheduled during the dry seasons (December to February and June to August), as rainfall in the rainforest can otherwise massively hinder progress on the tracks.

Terrain & paths

The terrain is a hilly lowland with extremely dense vegetation and muddy ground; hikes often lead over slippery roots and through shallow streams in the heart of the rainforest.

What to bring

Required are robust, waterproof shoes, insect repellent, and clothing that covers the body completely; a waterproof backpack protects your gear from the extremely high humidity.

Safe parking options exist only at inhabited stations or in villages along the RN4 road; never leave your vehicle unattended in remote sections of the forest for any reason.

Carrying a GPS device and taking an experienced guide is vital for safety; also, pay attention to the political security situation in the region and never travel alone into the forest.

Plan at least 3 to 4 days to get to know the nature and culture of the local peoples like the Mbuti, as progressing through the forest is a very slow and time-consuming process.
