Matupi Cave (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

Matupi Cave, tucked away within the Ituri rainforest, is one of Central Africa's most significant archaeological sites, providing a record of human occupation spanning over 40,000 years. Excavations conducted in the 1970s yielded a wealth of artifacts, most notably microliths, small stone tools, that are among the earliest examples found anywhere in the world. These finds suggest that Late Stone Age hunter-gatherers in the region developed advanced tool-making techniques much earlier than previously thought. The cave is situated in a limestone massif near Mount Hoyo and is surrounded by dense equatorial forest. Evidence from Matupi has been instrumental in reshaping theories about human adaptation to rainforest environments during the Pleistocene and Holocene epochs. In addition to stone tools, researchers found animal bone fragments that shed light on prehistoric diets and environmental changes. Today, the cave remains a crucial reference point for archaeologists studying the early expansion of modern humans across the African continent.
