Okapi Wildlife Reserve (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

The Okapi Wildlife Reserve is located in the Ituri rainforest in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Established in 1992, its primary mission is to protect the okapi, a shy forest mammal related to the giraffe that is found exclusively in this part of the Congo. The reserve covers about one-fifth of the Ituri Forest and is home to an incredible variety of animal species, including forest elephants and thirteen types of primates. A unique feature is the presence of the indigenous Mbuti and Efe Pygmies, who live as traditional hunter-gatherers in harmony with the forest. The landscape is characterized by dense vegetation, mighty rivers like the Epulu, and spectacular waterfalls. Despite international conservation efforts, illegal gold mining and armed poaching threaten the integrity of this natural jewel. Nonetheless, the reserve remains a symbol of the struggle to preserve biodiversity in one of the most inaccessible primary forests on Earth.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season from December to February has the best chances to see okapis, as they congregate near rivers. During the rainy season (March to November) roads are often impassable and animals are harder to locate.
🌅
Best time of day
Okapis are crepuscular - plan your observations for early morning or late afternoon. During the midday heat they typically rest in dense undergrowth and are rarely visible.
📜
Etiquette
Stay on marked trails and avoid loud noises to prevent scaring the shy okapis. Feeding or touching the animals is prohibited, and only photograph without flash.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars with good light-gathering ability are crucial for spotting okapis in the shady rainforest. Waterproof clothing and sturdy boots are essential as the Ituri forest is often wet and muddy.
🧭
Getting there
The Okapi Wildlife Reserve is in northeastern DR Congo, reachable only by flight to Kisangani and then by off-road vehicle. A permit from the Congolese wildlife authority is required.
🦌
What to expect
Okapis are very shy and blend perfectly into the dappled light of the rainforest. Expect only fleeting glimpses - any sighting is a special event.
