Historical Costermansville (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

Historical Costermansville, officially renamed Bukavu in 1953, was founded in 1901 by the Belgian colonial administration on the southern shores of Lake Kivu. Named after Governor-General Paul Costermans, the city was developed across five scenic peninsulas and became a favored residential area for European settlers due to its mild, highland climate. The architecture of Bukavu is distinguished by a significant collection of Art Deco villas and public structures built during the 1930s and 1940s. As a strategic border town near Rwanda and Burundi, Costermansville served as the administrative capital of the broader Kivu region. During the colonial era, its manicured gardens and sophisticated atmosphere earned it the nickname 'The Belgian Sanatorium.' Since independence, and particularly during the conflicts of the 1990s, Bukavu has been at the center of major political and military shifts in eastern Congo. Today, it remains the capital of South Kivu province, serving as a vital commercial hub and the main gateway for tourists visiting the Kahuzi-Biega National Park.
