Đakovo is situated in eastern Croatia within the Slavonia region and is often referred to as the heart of Slavonia. The city is best known for its monumental Cathedral of St. Peter, a 19th-century masterpiece of Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance architecture built by Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer. Pope John XXIII once described this red-brick structure as the most beautiful cathedral between Venice and Constantinople. Beyond its religious significance, Đakovo is globally renowned for its State Stud Farm, which has been breeding Lipizzaner horses since 1506, making it one of the oldest in Europe. The city's history dates back to the Roman era when it was known as Certissia. Today, the urban landscape features Baroque and historicist influences, complemented by lush parks and an animated pedestrian zone. Each July, the city hosts the Đakovački Vezovi festival, one of Croatia's largest folklore events, showcasing traditional costumes, music, and local crafts.
