Jankovac Valley (Croatia)

Weather…

Jankovac Valley in the Papuk Nature Park is a gem of the Slavonian highlands, named after Count Josip Janković. A 19th-century nature lover, the Count created a park-like landscape here with lakes and walking paths where he spent the final years of his life. The centerpiece of the valley is the 35-meter-high Skakavac waterfall, which tumbles over a travertine barrier into the canyon. The area's geological uniqueness lies in the meeting of metamorphic rock and limestone, resulting in numerous springs and rich flora. The 'Count's Path' educational trail leads visitors through dense beech forests to historical sites such as the cave of the Slavonian brigands. Since 1955, the valley has been under protection and is regarded as one of the most beautiful destinations in continental Croatia. Jankovac Valley also hosts a mountain lodge that serves as a starting point for numerous hikes in the Papuk mountains. The cultural and natural significance of the site was further bolstered by Papuk's recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access to this idyllic mountain valley in the Papuk mountains is usually managed via local roads leading directly into the nature park area. Visitors typically start their walk from the central visitor hub near the main lakes.
📅
Best season
The most favorable conditions for admiring the lakes and the impressive Skakavac waterfall are generally during the spring snowmelt or after autumn rains. Summer features a refreshing escape, though water levels might be slightly lower.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain mainly consists of well-maintained walking paths that gently navigate the valley floor alongside the lakes and water features. The trails around the main waterfall include some wooden stairs and slightly uneven natural steps.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots are perfectly adequate for the maintained valley trails. Bringing a light waterproof jacket is recommended due to the mist generated near the cascading waterfall.
🅿️
Parking
Parking is typically available at a designated parking lot near the valley's main entrance or visitor center. Because it is one of the most popular spots in the region, arriving early on weekends is highly recommended.
⚠️
Safety
While generally very safe, visitors should exercise caution on wet wooden walkways or mossy rocks near the waterfall, which can become quite slippery. Sticking to the established paths protects both you and the sensitive protected ecosystem.
⏱️
Time needed
Most visitors spend roughly two to four hours exploring the lakes, the waterfall, and the immediate surrounding paths. A more extensive hike into the broader Papuk mountains can easily extend the visit to a full day.
