Papuk Nature Park (Croatia)

Weather…

Papuk Nature Park is located in eastern Croatia and encompasses the most significant mountain range in Slavonia. Due to its extraordinary geological diversity, the park was designated as Croatia's first UNESCO Global Geopark in 2007. The mountain contains rocks representing nearly all geological periods, from Precambrian metamorphics to Mesozoic limestones. A highlight of the park is the Jankovac forest sanctuary, a pretty valley featuring mountain lakes, dense beech forests, and the impressive Skakavac waterfall. Papuk provides a habitat for numerous protected wildlife species, including red deer, wild boar, and rare birds of prey. The flora is equally diverse, with many orchid species and alpine meadows. Historically, the region is characterized by medieval fortifications such as Ružica Grad, one of the largest castle ruins in Croatia, which stands majestically above the forest. The park serves as a vital recreational area, offering an extensive network of hiking trails and educational paths focused on geology and biology.
