Motovun perches like a fortress above the Mirna River valley and is the epitome of Istrian hilltop towns. The 13th and 14th-century city walls almost completely encircle the historic core, offering spectacular panoramic views over Teran vineyards and the mysterious Motovun Forest. This forest is famous for its white truffles, among the world's most expensive edible mushrooms. The townscape is characterized by Venetian architecture; the Lion of St. Mark, the symbol of Venice, can be found repeatedly on gates and walls. Since 1999, the Motovun Film Festival has established itself as one of the most relaxed and significant festivals for independent cinema in Europe. Local legend tells of the good-natured giant Veli Jože, who protected the town. Today, Motovun is a magnet for foodies, artists, and hikers who explore the surroundings along the route of the historic Parenzana narrow-gauge railway.
