Umag, the first town encountered when entering Istria from Western Europe, is a dynamic destination featuring a captivating blend of history and modernity. Built on the remains of Roman settlements, its old town still preserves a medieval layout with narrow streets and characterful squares. The most prominent landmark is the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary, located in the main square. However, Umag is globally recognized primarily as a city of sports. The Stella Maris Resort hosts the annual ATP Croatia Open tennis tournament, an event that draws tens of thousands of visitors. Beyond sports, Umag provides a premier tourist infrastructure with luxury hotels and extensive camping resorts. The surrounding countryside is characterized by rolling hills covered in vineyards and olive groves, producing some of the finest local wines and oils. A visit to the nearby Savudrija, home to the oldest active lighthouse on the Adriatic, completes the experience.
