Kaldir sits atop a 240-meter hill near Motovun, commanding spectacular views over the Mirna River valley and the lush Istrian interior. Often called the orchard of Istria, this village is the center of fruit production for the entire peninsula. The sunny slopes surrounding the settlement are covered with meticulously kept apple, pear, peach, and plum orchards, creating a sea of white blossoms in spring and a bounty of fruit by late summer. The village center features traditional Istrian stone architecture and the Church of the Holy Trinity (Sveta Trojstvo), rebuilt in 1917. Unlike the more tourist-heavy hilltop towns, Kaldir remains a working agricultural community where authentic rural life prevails. Visitors can experience the local hospitality during the annual fruit festival (Fešta od fruti), where the year's harvest is celebrated with music and local gastronomy. Outdoor enthusiasts will find Kaldir an excellent base for exploring the rolling hills on foot or by bicycle. The nearby forests are part of the famous Istrian truffle-hunting grounds, and local producers often sell honey and olive oil alongside their fruit. It is a peaceful destination that gives a genuine taste of Istrian country life and some of the best photographic vantage points in the region.
