Stari Grad, situated at the head of a six-kilometer-long bay, is the historical heart of Hvar island. While Hvar town is known for its glamour, Stari Grad maintains a calm and authentic atmosphere. Founded in 384 BC by Greek settlers from the island of Paros, it stands as one of the oldest settlements in Croatia. The most remarkable site is the Stari Grad Plain (Ager), a vast agricultural area whose original Greek land division system, marked by dry stone walls, has remained virtually unchanged for millennia, a unique UNESCO World Heritage site. A cultural highlight in the town center is Petar Hektorović's Tvrdalj, a fortified Renaissance palace featuring an idyllic fish pond and philosophical inscriptions. The winding stone streets and small squares of the old town invite visitors to explore at a slow pace. Today, Stari Grad is a destination where ancient history meets excellent Mediterranean gastronomy and a relaxed island way of life.
The most pleasant time to visit is May–Jul.
