Omiš is a city where the mountains literally tumble into the sea. Its location at the Cetina canyon provided the medieval pirates of Omiš, the Sagittae, with an unbeatable strategic advantage. From their fortresses Mirabella (Peovica) and Starigrad (Fortica), they controlled Adriatic sea traffic for centuries. Today, the city is the hub for active tourism in Dalmatia. Visitors can glide across the canyon on one of Europe's longest ziplines, go rafting on the river, or climb the steep rock faces. However, the old town also gives tranquility with its churches, small squares, and traditional polyphonic Klapa singing, which is deeply rooted here. Unique to this region is the large Punta sand beach, formed by deposits from the Cetina, which slopes gently into the crystal-clear sea.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun, Jul, Sep.

Morning starts at the Omiš City Museum, a perfect dry sanctuary to explore the local pirate lore while the rain patters on the ancient stone roofs. At noon, we navigate the narrow limestone alleys between the House of the Happy Man and St. Michael's Church, where the tight architecture provides natural cover. In the afternoon, we carefully ascend to Mirabella Fortress; the steps are slick when wet, but the view of the misty Cetina canyon is exceptionally atmospheric. The evening is best spent in a cozy, covered tavern in the heart of the old town, warming up with hearty Dalmatian dishes and local red wine.
On a crisp winter morning, we explore the City Museum almost solo, relishing the off-season tranquility and the fresh, cool air. By noon, the low winter sun warms the stone facades around the House of the Happy Man as we stroll towards St. Michael's Church through empty streets. In the afternoon, we hike up to Mirabella; the sharp Bura wind clears the haze, offering unparalleled views that stretch to the distant islands. The evening settles in early with a stunning sunset over the Cetina river mouth, before we retreat to a cozy, heated wine cellar.
Morning: Ride into the canyon towards Radman's Mills. Midday: Lunch in the greenery by the river. Afternoon: Return trip and visit the small St. Peter's church. Evening: Relaxation at the city beach.
Early morning we cycle into the Cetina canyon despite the drizzle, with mist hanging mystically between the towering cliffs. By noon, we reach Radman's Mills and warm up by the open fireplace of the rustic restaurant with a hot bowl of soup. In the afternoon, we carefully navigate the wet asphalt back to St. Peter's Church, as the river takes on a deep, dark hue. We spend the evening drying our gear while reflecting on the wild and moody beauty of the rainy canyon scenery.
On a frosty but sunny winter morning, we cycle through the nearly deserted canyon towards Radman's Mills. At noon, we relish the absolute silence by the riverbank, with bare trees adding a starkly beautiful aesthetic to the cliffs. In the afternoon, we visit the ancient St. Peter's Church in the crisp winter light before the sun dips early behind the peaks. We return in the evening, refreshed by the cool mountain air, to enjoy the cozy warmth of our lodgings.
Morning: Hike up to the higher Starigrad Fortress. Midday: Drive to the mills for a rustic lunch. Afternoon: Explore the mountain villages above Omiš. Evening: Return and enjoy a fish dinner at the harbor.
We set off for Starigrad Fortress in heavy rain, which turns the steep cliff walls into glistening dark surfaces. At noon, we park at Radman's Mills and watch the swollen, rushing river from the comfort of the heated restaurant. In the afternoon, we navigate the coastal roads with care as the waves crash against the Omiš sea walls. We return to our base in the evening, listening to the rain drum against the windowpanes while reflecting on the day's sights.
On a clear winter morning, we drive up to Starigrad Fortress and enjoy the expansive views over the deep blue Adriatic. At noon, we stop at Radman's Mills, where a mystical calm prevails in winter and the fireplace burns cozily. In the afternoon, we explore the winding roads above the canyon before the sun sets early behind the mountain peaks. We end the evening with a gentle drive through the festively lit streets of Omiš, finishing the day in a relaxed mood.
